you know I never really realized how much the Shapeshifter actually resembles Ford at first?? like

-long brown coat

-red undershirt

-black pants

-totally extraneous chest-belt thing

-eyewear

-eyebags

-poofy gray hair

-punches monster and proudly holds up a trophy

-totally bonkers

Gf Dvd spoilers:

Hirsch confirms this was deliberate. Shifty never saw Ford’s face because he wore goggles and a mask but he saw his mannerisms and copied that for his disguise.

He even describes his design as: Ford lite.

that’s real interesting (and great). I figured that had to be deliberate at least out-of-universe, because the red-shirt-brown-coat-chest-belt is just a bit too similar to be coincidence (although in-universe it doesn’t make a lot of sense; that’s Ford’s future look, not one that Shifty would ever have seen. unless Ford actually did base his outfit on the bean can guy.)

knowing that Shifty was deliberately imitating Ford makes this episode 1000% times funnier to me now, honestly.

although interestingly Shifty seems to have forgotten one detail:

which is weird because Shifty definitely knows that Ford has six fingers. they refer to him as ‘that six-fingered nerd’ at one point.

Most likely he wanted to keep close to the can of beans design and didn’t know if they knew about Ford. He approached them in this form before hearing about “the guy” as they were calling him.

The DVD commentary revelation is interesting!  Not super surprising, but nice to have confirmed.  (Although, that makes me wonder WHEN Ford’s post-Portal, default outfit got designed, production-timeline-wise.  Perhaps quite early!  Maybe before S2 entirely.  I’m just curious.)

One issue, although perhaps it can be explained away: Shifty DID get a clear look at Ford’s face.  I know that J3 tries to have Ford saying that he hid his face and all, but… We see in ATOTS that Ford isn’t hiding his face when Shifty hatched.  Sure, Ford became cautious later, but we don’t know how much later. Did he become cautious the moment he saw Shifty transform into the coffee mug?  Is the theory that infant-Shifty couldn’t comprehend / remember such a complex new form, so by the time Ford was able to start hiding his face, it was okay?  (Yes, Shifty is aware enough to mimic the coffee mug instantly.  But that’s a really simple form.)
