teaching children that they are allowed to walk away and cool off if they are feeling overwhelmed might literally save their life as teens/adults

In our classroom (and in all the classrooms in the school) we have a designated quiet space that is actually quite comfortable. Often we send children to that area when they’re overwhelmed and crying over [stuff that preschoolers cry about] but sometimes we’ll see children voluntarily sit there with a blanket or stuffed animal to cool off. In those areas we have activities that allow them to interact with their feelings, so when they come out they’re able to identify if they were angry, frustrated, hurt, or sad over what happened. It’s really nice seeing a small child who’s able to articulate when their feelings are hurt, and express that to the person who hurt them.
